Great News for Cycling Training: £78 Million Confirmed for Bikeability

The government has just announced more than £100 million in funding for active travel across England — and £78 million of that is going directly to Bikeability, the programme we deliver right here in Southampton and Portsmouth.

This is a three-year funding commitment, which means more children and families in our area will have the opportunity to build the skills and confidence to ride on today's roads. It also gives delivery organisations like ours the certainty to plan ahead, retain experienced instructors, and keep doing what we do best.

What does this mean locally?

As an approved Bikeability provider, Pedal Power Training delivers Levels 1, 2 and 3 cycle training across Southampton, Portsmouth and surrounding areas. This funding ensures that schools and families can continue to access high-quality cycle training — giving children a life skill that stays with them.

Since 2007, Bikeability has trained more than 5 million children nationally. In the last year alone, 500,000 places were booked — with the South East one of the busiest regions in the country.

It's not just about bikes

The announcement also includes funding for walk-to-school programmes, community cycling initiatives for adults, and active travel planning for secondary school students. It's all part of a bigger picture: helping people of all ages choose healthier, more affordable and more sustainable ways to get around.

Active Travel Commissioner Chris Boardman described the investment as one that changes how people move every day: "It's a child gaining the confidence to ride to school, a family choosing to walk, or someone getting back on a bike because it finally feels possible." He added that these small shifts add up quickly — strengthening communities, supporting public transport and giving families more affordable options.

Emily Cherry, Chief Executive of the Bikeability Trust, said: "Bikeability is an essential skill, benefitting children's health and happiness, and helping them make more sustainable travel choices for life."

What can you do?

If your child's school isn't yet offering Bikeability sessions, ask them to get in touch with us. We also offer 1:1 tuition for children and adults who want a bit of extra support building their confidence on two wheels.

This is brilliant news for cycling — and we're proud to be part of delivering it locally.
