5 Reasons to Get Your Child Cycling This Spring
The days are getting longer, the weather's warming up (finally, after what feels like constant grey skies!), and there's no better time to get your child out on two wheels. Here's why spring is the perfect season to build their cycling confidence — and how we can help.
1. Longer Days, More Time to Ride
The clocks go forward on 29 March, and suddenly those after-school hours feel full of possibility. More daylight means more time for your child to practise, explore and enjoy cycling — whether that's a spin around the park or riding to a friend's house.
Spring evenings are made for getting outside, and there's nothing quite like watching your child's confidence grow with every ride.
2. The Perfect Weather Window
Let's be honest — nobody loves cycling in the rain. Spring brings milder temperatures and drier days, making it far more inviting for children (and parents!) to get out and ride.
It's also the ideal time to get ahead of summer. Children who build their skills now will be ready to make the most of the holidays — whether that's family rides, cycling to the beach, or simply getting around independently.
3. Confidence That Lasts a Lifetime
Cycling isn't just a fun activity — it's a life skill. And the confidence children gain from learning to ride stays with them long after the training wheels come off.
The numbers back this up: 93% of riders feel more confident cycling on roads after completing Bikeability Level 2 training, and 96% of parents say they're more likely to encourage their child to cycle afterwards (The Bikeability Trust, 2025).
That's not just confidence on a bike — it's awareness, decision-making, and independence that carry into everything they do.
4. It's Great for the Whole Family
Cycling is one of those brilliant activities that everyone can enjoy together. A family ride on a sunny spring morning is hard to beat — and Southampton and Portsmouth have some wonderful routes to explore, from traffic-free paths to gentle coastal rides.
Not sure where to start? Keep an eye on our blog — we'll be sharing our favourite family-friendly routes in both cities very soon.
5. Every Ride Makes a Difference
Here's a stat that might surprise you: if every child who's taken part in Bikeability cycled to school for a year, it would save 1.92 million tonnes of carbon. That's the same as growing over 31 million trees for 10 years (The Bikeability Trust, 2025).
Even one child swapping the car for cycling to school saves half a tonne of carbon. So every pedal really does count — for your child's confidence and for the planet.
