Southsea Coastal Scheme: New Cycling Route

Exciting news for cyclists in Portsmouth! 🚲

The Southsea Coastal Scheme has delivered brand new, dedicated cycling infrastructure along the seafront — and it's open now.

The new Frontage 3 cycle lane runs from Blue Reef Aquarium to the Hovertravel terminal along Southsea Common. It's:

  • 3 metres wide and two-way

  • Fully separated from pedestrian areas

  • Connected to National Cycle Network Route 2

  • Complete with 16 new bike stands near the Beach Club, Hovertravel, and Blue Reef Aquarium

There's also the Southsea to Eastney Esplanade route — a scenic, coastal path with dedicated cycling access to local beaches.

This is exactly the kind of infrastructure that makes cycling more accessible and enjoyable for everyone — and it's brilliant to see it happening right here in Portsmouth. Whether you're commuting, riding with the family, or just exploring the seafront, these routes are a fantastic addition to the city.

The skills our Bikeability training builds — road awareness, positioning, confidence — are what help riders make the most of routes like these. 💛

Have you tried the new route yet?
