Pedal Power Training Secures Four-Year Bikeability Contract with Portsmouth City Council
We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a four-year contract to deliver comprehensive Bikeability training across Portsmouth schools. This significant partnership with Portsmouth City Council will see our team delivering Balance Bike training, Learn to Ride sessions, and Bikeability Levels 1, 2, and 3 courses throughout the city until 2029.
Donna Coyne, Director of Pedal Power Training Ltd, shared her enthusiasm about the contract award:
"We are incredibly proud to continue our work with Portsmouth City Council, building on our established relationship to deliver high-quality cycle training across the city. This four-year commitment allows us to make a lasting impact on cycling skills and active travel habits throughout Portsmouth."
The successful tender highlighted Pedal Power Training's extensive experience and exceptional quality standards in cycle training delivery. As a certified Bikeability provider since 2009, the company continues to maintain outstanding instruction standards, recently reinforced by positive external quality assurance reviews from the Bikeability Trust.
This contract renewal strengthens Pedal Power Training's ongoing collaboration with Portsmouth's active travel initiatives. Working alongside local partners, including the city's Active Travel team and community cycling organisations, Pedal Power Training will help advance Portsmouth's Transport Strategy and support the development of safer cycling infrastructure and habits across the city.
A key strength of Pedal Power Training is its team of local instructors who know Portsmouth's streets, neighborhoods, and schools intimately. This local knowledge allows for tailored training that maximizes use of the city's cycling infrastructure while addressing area-specific challenges. The team works closely with Portsmouth's Active Travel officers to ensure training aligns with the city's sustainable transport goals and is available at appropriate levels for all participants.
"Portsmouth's commitment to sustainable transport aligns perfectly with our mission," noted Donna. "Through our training programmes, we aim to empower the next generation of cyclists with the skills and confidence to make cycling a natural part of their daily lives, contributing to healthier lifestyles and a more sustainable city."
For the 2025/26 academic year, the programme will deliver an impressive
Balance Bikes: 90 places
Learn to Ride: 509 places
Level 1+2 Combined: 1,810 places
Level 3: 75 places
This comprehensive coverage ensures that children across Portsmouth will have access to age-appropriate cycle training throughout their school journey.
The company has also secured dedicated funding to deliver "Learn to Ride" courses, providing focused training for those taking their first pedal strokes. These specialized sessions fill a crucial gap between Balance Bike training and Level 1 Bikeability, ensuring a complete pathway for cycling development regardless of a child's starting ability.
Committed to inclusivity, Pedal Power Training offers loan bikes and helmets to all participants, breaking down barriers to cycling participation.
"Whether you're an experienced cyclist or a complete novice, we have the equipment and expertise to help," explains Donna. "No child should miss out on learning this essential life skill due to lack of equipment."
Pedal Power Training's approach emphasises personalised relationships with schools, quality instruction, and continuous improvement. The company's deep connections with Portsmouth schools, developed over many years of delivery, enable tailored training that meets the specific needs of each school community.
With this renewed partnership, Pedal Power Training looks forward to continuing its contribution to Portsmouth's cycling culture, supporting the city's vision for active, healthy communities and sustainable transport options.
